As AI continues to dominate tech industry news and design trends, data centers are forced to adapt to the booming demand for available computing power and memory required to efficiently execute training and inferencing.
New on the scene, (as of October 2024) the UALink Consortium is defining an open-industry standard technology capable of supporting high-speed, low-latency communication between accelerators for scale-up AI systems in data centers. By creating an open ecosystem for interconnect devices that is capable of meeting the expanding industry need, UALink is solving the AI accelerators and communication challenges – helping to expand memory access for large AI workloads.
With UALink, data centers can support direct load, store, and atomic operations between accelerators. The result? Data centers are now able to support hundreds of accelerators in a single pod. UALink provides:
- Increased performance with low-latency, high-bandwidth fabrics,
- Power efficiency, by saving 75+ Watts per accelerator compared to alternative solutions,
- Cost efficiency with lower power and acquisition cost – resulting in a decreased total cost of ownership, and
- Operator diversity as Consortium membership consists of an array of UALink accelerators and switch vendors.
Although UALink is fairly “young,” it is taking the industry by storm. Since its launch, UALink has been featured in numerous media outlets, including Forbes, Semiconductor Engineering, Converge! Network Digest, and Blocks & Files. I think the Consortium’s incorporation announcement was best highlighted by Matt Kimball and Patrick Moorhead (Moor Insights and Strategy) who noted, “the UALink Consortium (and forthcoming specification) is a significant milestone for the industry as the challenges surrounding training AI models and operationalizing data become increasingly complex, time-consuming and costly.”
Our team has enjoyed working with UALink Consortium leadership, supporting their public relations and marketing communications efforts; and we are excited to see how things advance this year. Our collaborative efforts have resulted in unique brand messaging, measurable 2025 marketing goals, and engaging methods to help the organization share the benefits of UALink and achieve their mission. The team has also contributed to the development of essential educational content – including blogs, a white paper, and an overview presentation – that convey technical knowledge in an easy-to-digest format. Leveraging our team’s established media relationships has allowed us to drive brand awareness and encourage growth and, as a result, we anticipate a bright future for this budding organization.
