It’s Super Bowl time again, and along with all the prognostication and hype (can Madden NFL REALLY pick the winner?) there are countless articles regarding another important Super Bowl tradition – EATING.
This year, those articles seemed to all focus on chicken wings. It is estimated Americans will consume 1.3 BILLION chicken wings. You have to hand it to the Poultry Industry for getting these numbers out there. Great campaign. Depending on the article, that number ranged between 1.3-1.8 billion, so maybe their story could have been clearer, but still, that’s a LOT of wings.
Super Bowl weekend ranks second in the nation’s colossal calorie consumption days (right next to Thanksgiving) This Forbes article summed up some of the other things Americans devour as we cheer for our favorite team, underdog, or commercial.
- 3 BILLION chicken wings
- 5 million pizzas
- 200 million pounds of avocados
- 325 million gallons of beer
So out of curiosity, we thought we would poll the Nereus staff to see how our snack preferences lined up with the rest of the nation (the beer is a given!). Here are the Nereus Super Bowl munchies by the numbers:
- Nachos/Chips/Dips 8
- Chili 3
- Pizza 2
- Chicken Wings 2
- Hotdogs/Burgers 2
- Veggies 0
True to our creative, out-of-the-box nature, chicken wings aren’t high on our “must have” list. We like them, but they fall behind other things. And while pizza made the list, it was Nachos/Chips/Dips that topped the Nereus list. As one of us put it, “I only show up for the Queso.”
There was one area where we might line up with the rest of the nation, however; there were NO votes for vegetables of any kind. Clearly there’s no need for a “healthy” pretense during the Super Bowl.
Of course, we also like to supplement our “must haves” with some other fantastic foods like ribs, bacon-wrapped jalapeno poppers, seven layer bean dip, and a KILLER Bloody Mary!
Thanks to the Poultry Industry, we’ve discovered some of our culinary passions and talents. We should probably look for some other excuses beyond the Super Bowl to get together and share some favorites.
I’ll definitely show up for the Queso.
