Account Executive Matt Baxter joined the Nereus team in 2017. He lives in Beaverton with his wife, three kids and a large dog. A geek at heart, he’s been involved in tech PR for several centuries (in tech years). Read on to learn more about him.
1. What brought you to public relations in the first place?
As a communications person, it’s always satisfying to see your messages shape the dialogue, so it was that challenge that really drew me in. That, and the fact I really don’t like math.
2. What inspires you?
I think it could be summed up by saying I’m a sucker for a good story, whether it’s an underdog situation, like the Spartans at Thermopylae. Stories of people who persevere and keep pushing ahead – Tesla, Maurice Herzog, Lewis & Clark, Louis Zamperini – the list is too long. I guess you could say I’m a sucker for a good story about the triumph of the human spirit.
3. What do you like most about working at Nereus?
I enjoy learning new things and seeing how the dots all connect. Our clients are involved in some amazing forward-looking things that shape how technology is implemented today and will play out in the future.
4. What’s something not everyone knows about you?
If I answered this, too many people would know. Then I wouldn’t have an answer to this question in the future.
5. Describe your perfect weekend.
A backpacking trip with my kids to a mountain lake where we can fly fish.
6. Favorite vacation spot?
Maui no ka ‘oi
7. Timbers or Blazers?
Blazers
8. Star Wars or Star Trek?
Answer this question I cannot. It would not be logical.
9. Dogs or cats?
Dogs all the way. I do like kittens (high cuteness factor), but a little poem sums up cats:
The problem with a kitten is that
It soon grows up to be a cat.
10. Favorite local restaurant?
Watson Hall in downtown Beaverton
11. Favorite season in Portland?
Whichever one is between 65-77 degrees.
12. Favorite movie?
Inconceivable; it would depend on the genre and my mood.
(There is a quote from The Princess Bride for nearly every situation in life.)
13. Favorite book?
Anything by Brandon Sanderson.
14. Favorite musician/band?
I love Spotify because then I don’t have to decide. But if my life depended on it, I’d say U2.
15. Favorite pizza topping?
Easy – NOT ANCHOVIES!!
16. Coffee or tea?
Coffee is life.
17. Drive to work/bike/or Tri-Met?
When the weather is nice, I enjoy biking to work. The rest of the time I drive.
18. Beach or mountains?
Give me a mountain lake anytime, and I’ll be happy.
19. iPhone or Android?
iPhone.
20. Walk-up song?
I used to have this one nailed down, but Joe (Balich) messed this up for me by asking, “Am I walking up to the mound or stepping into a bar?” And he’s right; it all depends on the moment. That said, it could be a high energy classic – Immigrant Song (Led Zeppelin) or Thunder Struck (ACDC) – to something with a beat you can take in stride – The Man (The Killers) or Float On (Modest Mouse) or Walking the Wire (Imagine Dragons).
